How To Create A Wellness Ambience At Home

Creating a wellness ambience at home is all about connecting with the five senses and giving yourself a sacred space in which to ground, become present and still you mind. This is where the magic happens!

Designing your own spa-like serenity at home doesn’t have to cost the Earth though, with just a few simple touches you can create a holistic haven in which to feel at peace.

Set An Intention

The first thing to do when creating your area of wellness at home is to set an intention for your space. Mindfully and consciously choose what you want your space to reflect and what you will use it for. You will then be able to create the perfect atmosphere in which to allow these intentions to come to life. Whether you want it to be a place for presence and stillness or safety and security is up to you.

Declutter

Secondly, you’ll want to declutter the area so that each item you are surrounded by has a purpose. Unnecessary extras will only distract you from your moment of mindfulness. Clutter has been found to cause stress which is the last thing you want when stepping into your sphere of serenity.

Choose Neutral Tones

Choosing a neutral colour palette for your wellness space helps you to become more mindful and ensures that it is a welcoming area that you will want to spend time in. Colours like white, light grey, pale pink and sky blue will help to create a calming space in which to relax. Adding natural elements to your space such as stones, water and plants will also increase tranquillity and allow you to connect with the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi; finding the beauty in simplicity and imperfection.

Add Your Magic

Once you have decided on where and how you will create your wellness space, it’s time to add your magic. These are the features that will really up the ambience to make it a place of peace.

Candles

Candles are the perfect addition to a wellness area at home as they have so many benefits. Not only do scented candles bring a fragrant aroma to a room, but they also create a relaxing level of mood lighting which is a pleasure for the senses. The subtle, flickering glow of a candle can help you enter into a peaceful, trance-like state, especially if you practise a calm candlelight meditation.

Mindful Music

Meditating, particularly while listening to instrumental, meditative music is a proven drug free technique for reducing stress, overcoming depression and even improving your brain function, memory and IQ. You’ll therefore want to ensure you have some sort of sound system set up in your home to allow you to listen to contemplative music such as the sounds of nature or Tibetan singing bowls. This will ensure that you reap the benefits of meditation, by tapping into the vibrational frequency needed for transformational healing.

Having gongs or singing bowls in your home also allows you to feel the energy of the sound as you can connect with the vibrations reverberating around the room.

Essential Oil Diffuser

Aromatherapy is a complementary addition to meditation and journaling as the essential oils used in a diffuser help to promote peace and wellbeing. Close your eyes and allow yourself to slip away into stillness with the scent of essential oils surrounding your body. Each type of essential oil has its own benefits, with fragrances like Vetiver, Sandalwood and Palo Santo being favourites for meditation. Not only to many essential oil diffusers look fantastic these days, but they smell divine too!

Creature Comforts

Having blankets and cushions around you allows you to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed which serves to add to the wellness ambience of your space. Using different textures and fabrics is a delight for the senses and it is important to choose colours and materials that bring you joy. Meditation cushions ensure you keep proper alignment during your practise which gives your mind the space it needs to still and expand rather than being distracted by discomfort.

Even if you live in a very small space, you can add features that will allow you to connect with the self and switch off from distractions like computers and TVs. At the very least you can make bathing into a ritualistic experience by adding Epsom salts, candles and even flower petals to create a simple space of silence.

Our retreats help to give you ideas and inspiration to ensure self-care becomes a sustainable practise that you can experience every day, even when you’re back at home and continuing the grind of daily life.
